Think vile villain Ross Wilkes (Ian Burfield) couldn’t get any worse on Coronation Street? Think again.
Every week, the long-lost dad of Weatherfield’s beloved mechanic Tyrone Dobbs’ (Alan Halsall) seems to grow more and more predatory – which is saying, something, given his entrance.
It turns out, Ross took advantage of Ty’s mum Cassie Plummer’s (Claire Sweeney) when she was a 15-year-old drug addict by paying her for sex.
Needless to say, the presence of her abuser near her family was more than Cassie could bare, and she tried every trick in the book to make him sling his hook.
Unfortunately, sly Ross was able to turn the tables on Cassie and make her look like the bad guy in Tyrone’s eyes. This meant that Ross was responsible for Cassie’s sad departure – and maybe, her possible murder.
Since then, Ross has well and truly got his feet under the table and has continued to exert his toxic influence not only over Tyrone, but his son Dorin (Henry Nye Meller). He even tried to force the poor boy into boxing, and then tried doing the same with Tyrone.
While Tyrone is eager to impress his dad and dismisses his toxicity as him being ‘a dinousar’, Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) is not so easily won over. She already suspects Ross has something to do with Cassie’s disappearance, and saw red after discovering that Ross had convinced Tyrone to bar Hope and Ruby (Isabella Flanagan and Billie Naylor) from boxing due to good old fashioned sexism.
Things took a turn for the worse when Ross goaded Ty into punching Chesney Brown (Sam Aston) during a heated row. Which we all know, is like kicking a puppy. Unforgivable.
So far, Ross’s toxic influence has been confined to the Dobbs’ household.
That’s about to change. The villain is about to set his twisted sights on a new target – Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby).
Poor old Summertime’s had a turbulent time on the Cobbles lately, after her new boyfriend Marco Rhodes (William Teasdale) was arrested for being a getaway driver in a robbery.
Marco is currently sharing a cell with Gary Windass (Mikey North), who is currently banged up for eight months after helping Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) cover up the fact that she killed Theo (James Cartwright).
What’s Ross’s involvement in all this? He’s only the prison guard.
In upcoming scenes of Coronation Street, we’ll see conniving Ross abuse his authority over Marco to target poor Summer.
In the cell, Gary notices a gash on Marco’s arm. Marco plays it down but Gary’s suspicious…
Later, Summer is upset when she and Maria Connor arrive at the prison for visiting hours, only for the guard to report that Marco won’t come out of his cell.
Maria begs Gary not to get involved when he tells he is worried Marco is getting bullied.
Later, Summer finds Ross in the Rovers and is grateful when he says he will keep an eye on Marco. Call me cynical, but it seems unlikely that Ross is doing this out of the goodness of his heart.
Ross continues the nice guy routine when he tells Marco he’s put his name down for a cleaning job to keep him occupied.
However, Ross is singing a very different tune later when he finds Marco alone in his cell. What is Ross going to do?
During their next visit, Summer tells Marco he is lucky to have Ross on his side. Marco nods in agreement.
But later, we know that couldn’t be further from the truth when Ross spots a card from Summer in Marco’s cell… and rips it to pieces.
Whatever Ross’s interest is in Summer, it can’t be good…
