The long-running investigative franchise Unsolved Mysteries has officially entered a new era with the launch of its video podcast series on YouTube. Debuting on October 29, the series marks a significant shift for the brand by reintroducing an on-camera host to guide viewers through cold cases, paranormal events, and unexplained disappearances.
The new format is a partnership between Unsolved Media—the production arm of original creators Cosgrove/Meurer Productions—and the audio company Audacy. This move follows several years of the Netflix revival (2020–2024), which utilized a hostless structure to emphasize the stories of victims and investigators. By returning to a “hosted” model, the franchise aims to recapture the direct-to-audience engagement that defined its original broadcast run.
The series leverages YouTube and podcast platforms to reach a global audience for crowdsourced leads.
Jordan Murphy and the Return of the Narrator
Jordan Murphy has been selected to lead the new series, filling the role once famously occupied by Robert Stack and later Dennis Farina. Murphy serves as the on-screen presence, narrating the dramatizations and interviews that have been the hallmark of the series since its 1987 debut. The decision to bring back a host coincides with the show’s transition to a platform where personal connection and community interaction are central to the viewing experience.
The shift to YouTube is strategically designed to harness the platform’s crowdsourcing potential. By presenting full video episodes for free on a global site, the production team increases the likelihood of reaching individuals who may have information regarding decades-old cold cases.
Premiere Case: The Pinnacle Lake Murders
The premiere episode focuses on a tragic 2006 cold case from Washington State. It details the murders of Mary Cooper and her daughter, Susanna Stodden, who were shot while hiking the Pinnacle Lake Trail. Despite nearly 20 years of investigation, the case remains unsolved, making it a primary candidate for the show’s refreshed focus on generating new leads.
Beyond local cold cases, this season is set to cover several of history’s most enduring enigmas, including:
The 1937 disappearance of aviator Amelia Earhart. The 1990 Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum heist, where $500 million in art was stolen. The mysterious 2014 disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.New video episodes are scheduled to drop every Thursday on the official Unsolved Mysteries YouTube channel, with audio versions simultaneously available on major podcast platforms. To keep the community engaged with ongoing developments, the series will also release “update” segments on select Tuesdays, providing the latest information on cases that have seen movement since their original airing.
