The Social Reckoning Doesn’t Portray Mark Zuckerberg as a Villain, Aaron Sorkin Explains Why

Mark Zuckerberg is not portrayed as a villain in Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning. The writer-director explained his approach while discussing his view of the film’s version of Zuckerberg and Jeremy Strong’s performance.

During a recent interview with The New York Times, Sorkin discussed Mark’s role in The Social Reckoning and his approach to writing him.

The 65-year-old screenwriter said, “I will tell you that in terms of Mark, in both cases, ‘The Social Network’ and ‘The Social Reckoning,’ or any antihero, which is what Mark is, not a villain. I, as the writer, can’t judge that character. I write that character as if they’re making their case to God why they should get into heaven.”

Jeremy Strong defended Mark Zuckerberg throughout The Social Reckoning

According to Sorkin, Jeremy Strong defended Mark while making the film. He also described Strong’s approach to the role and what happened after the actor finished his final shot.

The screenwriter said, “Jeremy Strong, who blows the doors off the place playing this part, was constantly defending Mark to me. Not just on the set. He’d write to me late at night. And as soon as his last shot was over, on his last day of shooting, as soon as I called, “Cut!” Jeremy Strong marched up to me, and this was the first time I heard him use his own voice on the set, not Mark’s voice, and in his own voice said, “If I’d been playing Jeff, I’d have been defending Jeff.””

The Social Reckoning centers on Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen and journalist Jeff Horwitz. Mikey Madison plays Haugen, while Jeremy Allen White portrays Horwitz. The film explores the reporting and events surrounding Facebook’s internal research and decisions.

Sorkin wrote and directed the film as a follow-up to his 2010 movie The Social Network. Strong takes over the role of Zuckerberg from Jesse Eisenberg in the new film.

The Social Reckoning is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 9, 2026.
