A man has been arrested after threatening to detonate butane gas cylinders in one of Madrid’s most popular and busiest streets.

The man barricaded himself on the third floor of a flat block between the Calle Montera and Gran Vía, police sources told the news agency EFE.

His arms were wounded and covered in blood, the insiders claimed, and he was arrested at around 6.20pm local time after a negotiator subdued him.

The man was carrying at least one butane gas cylinder, according to the local newspaper Somos Madrid.

He has a criminal record and remains in custody, the outlet added.

The local Metro station was briefly closed but reopened at 6.15pm, while a McDonald’s next to the apartment block has also been reopened.

Traffic on the Gran Vía was not affected by the incident.

A police cordon has since been lifted, a witness said on X.

Butane gas is often used for indoor heaters and portable cookers.
