Onchain tracker Lookonchain flagged the transfers first, describing them as “likely to sell.” That label reflects an interpretation of wallet activity rather than confirmed sales, since tokens can move to exchanges for custody or market-making purposes.
Separate onchain data from analyst Ember provided firmer evidence for part of the batch. Of the 165,000 HYPE routed through Flowdesk, 75,000 tokens worth roughly $4.19 million were exchanged for USDC directly on Hyperliquid. Another 90,000 HYPE worth about $5.04 million reached deposit addresses at OKX and Bybit.
The fate of the remaining tokens from the 433,025 release has not been confirmed by onchain data.
HYPE closed around $56.16 on Aug. 7 before dropping to approximately $54.06 on Aug. 8. The decline coincided with the team transactions, though timing alone does not confirm the unlock caused the full move.

Revenue Declining Despite Record Volume
The unlock lands during a difficult revenue stretch for Hyperliquid. Gross protocol revenue peaked at roughly $357 million in Q3 2025 and has fallen every quarter since, reaching about $202 million in Q2 2026 — a 43% drop, according to DefiLlama data.

Open interest hit a record $11 billion on July 13. Hyperliquid now handles about 9% of all open perp positions globally, up from under 7% in late May.
The gap between volume growth and revenue decline stems largely from HIP-3, a program launched in October 2025 that lets anyone staking 500,000 HYPE deploy their own perp markets and keep up to half the trading fees. Builder-deployed markets have grown from about 2% of perp volume at the start of 2026 to roughly half of all volume now.
Cost of revenue rose from under 6% of gross revenue in Q2 2025 to 18% a year later.
Real-World Asset Perps Now Lead the Platform
Real-world asset perps — covering crude oil, gold, Nvidia, Tesla, a Nasdaq-100 tracker, and pre-IPO names like SpaceX — hit a record $3.6 billion in open interest this month. Between July 13 and July 19, tokenized stocks and commodities did $25 billion in volume, 52% of the weekly total.
Trade.xyz accounts for more than 90% of all HIP-3 open interest. On Monday, a single trade on a thin Korean pre-market venue dropped Trade.xyz’s SK Hynix contract 19% and triggered liquidations the firm has since agreed to reimburse.
Spot HYPE ETFs posted their first weekly outflow in the week to July 17, roughly $7 million, ending a nine-week inflow streak.
The Assistance Fund bought roughly $149 million of HYPE in Q2 2026, down from nearly $290 million in Q3 2025.
Onchain data from Lookonchain noted that despite recent institutional selling, three newly created wallets withdrew 165,425 HYPE worth $9.16 million from FalconX over the past five days — suggesting some buyers are still accumulating at current levels.
