Tragedy and devastation were in abundance in Emmerdale as Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) and Dawn Taylor’s (Olivia Bromley) wedding celebrations – or lack thereof – culminated with the death of a show legend.
The big day, which Joe claimed to be the happiest of his life, proved to be one of the worst, not only for him but for several residents of the eponymous village.
Dawn did a runner with ex Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle), who claimed that nemesis Joe was the one who attacked him earlier in the year.
When bride-to-be Dawn uncovered the truth, she hightailed it back to the village to wed Joe but tragedy struck before any vows were exchanged, with Jimmy King (Nick Miles) crashing through the marquee.
The trio of characters were left in a bad way, with Dawn knocked out, Jimmy unconscious at the wheel and Joe trapped underneath some of the electrical appliances as the marquee lay in ruins.
Nicola (Nicola Wheeler), who had been on her way to a special picnic organised by Jimmy, stumbled upon the wreckage and swiftly called for help. Dawn alerted her to the fact that Jimmy was inside and, devastated, the cafe owner headed to see her husband, who was in a bad way.
In emotional scenes, Jimmy revealed that he’d been planning to ask his beloved Nico to renew their vows, gifting her with an eternity ring. In a fantasy sequence, the much-loved Emmerdale couple exchanged vows and shared their love for one another – but in reality, Jimmy had died.
No, you’re crying.
Joe, meanwhile, couldn’t secure his freedom and pleaded with Dawn to flee for the safety of her and her baby before the marquee went up in flames.
The pair shared a kiss and, after taking a grieving Nicola to safety on the lawn outside, Dawn watched in horror as an explosion ensued inside the marquee. Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) was among those watching, devastated at the prospect of Joe being gone.
But is Joe really dead? We’ll just have to wait and see but for a little look at what’s to come tomorrow, you’ve come to the right place.
What happens next in Emmerdale? Spoilers for Friday, August 28 episode
As you’d expect, much of tomorrow’s episode deals with the fallout of what transpired on screen today including Jimmy’s death, so devastation is a certainty as emotions run high.
In the wake of the atrocity, DS Ramsden arrives at the scene and an investigation is launched – with a deep resentment driving the detective.
Will her secrets come to light?
Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham), meanwhile, watches from afar with guilt written all over her face. The question is: just what has she done? And will the truth come out?
Emmerdale airs these scenes Friday August 28 at 8pm on ITV1 or stream from 7am on ITVX or YouTube.
