Jon Rahm has reached a formal separation agreement with LIV Golf, opting to forfeit more than $100 million in remaining contract value to secure his release from the league. The settlement, filed late Wednesday in a New Jersey bankruptcy court, marks the end of Rahm’s tenure as the league’s most dominant individual performer and clears a legal path for his potential return to the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.

Under the terms of the deal, Rahm agreed to release all monetary and economic claims against LIV Golf. This includes approximately $7.5 million in unpaid dues and an estimated $100 million in remaining future guarantees from the landmark nine-figure contract he signed in late 2023. Additionally, Rahm will forfeit his 25% ownership stake in his team franchise, Legion XIII.

The Terms of Brand Independence

In exchange for the significant financial forfeiture, Rahm regains exclusive control of his name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights. This includes the rights to his personal “Rahmbo” brand and the “Legion XIII” trademarks, though court filings specify he is prohibited from using team-related marks within the competing TGL league. According to reporting from Front Office Sports, the agreement allows Rahm to regain his status as an independent brand after years of shared commercial rights with the league.

The separation comes as LIV Golf navigates Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, which the league filed for on September 8, 2026. The league’s financial structure shifted significantly earlier that year when Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) ended its funding in April. Since then, the league has attempted to restructure as “LIV 2.0.”

Path to a Tour Return

Rahm’s departure follows a period of heavy dominance on the LIV circuit, where he won three consecutive individual season championships from 2024 through 2026. Despite his success and $106.8 million in on-course earnings during that span, his ability to participate in traditional tour events remained restricted by his LIV obligations. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp previously indicated the tour would not enter negotiations with players who remained legally under contract with the rival league.

With the legal ties severed, Rahm is already scheduled to make his first post-LIV appearance. He is slated to compete in the Abu Dhabi Championship from November 5–8, 2026. This coincides with the final court approval hearing for his settlement, which is scheduled to be overseen by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Michael B. Kaplan on November 5.

While Rahm is the most prominent star to exit during the bankruptcy proceedings, he is not the only one. Rahm’s exit specifically secures his eligibility for future legacy events, potentially smoothing the way for his participation in the 2027 Ryder Cup, provided he meets the remaining tour membership requirements.
