Channing Tatum Auditioned for Another Marvel Role & It Didn’t Go Well

Actor Channing Tatum recently shared how he failed his audition for Thor. Tatum, who made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Gambit, revealed that he only wanted to audition for Kenneth Branagh. Branagh directed the first Thor movie featuring Chris Hemsworth as the titular character alongside Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Idris Elba, and more.

Channing Tatum recently spoke about how he bombed his audition for the 2011 movie, Thor.

The actor revealed how moving too much cost him the role and stated, “After I did one take, [Branagh] was like, ‘You’re not allowed to move. Put your hands on this chair.’ And I froze. He nailed my crutch. I spent the next five years really trying to learn stillness.” (via Variety)

Tatum conveyed that he was only auditioning for the role as he wanted to work with Branagh. He said, “I didn’t really want to be Thor. But I wanted to audition in front of Kenneth Branagh.” Hemsworth ultimately bagged the role of Thor in the MCU. The actor is slated to appear next in the upcoming sequel, Avengers: Doomsday.

As well as Tatum, Tom Hiddleston, who portrays the role of Thor’s brother, Loki, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, initially auditioned for the role of Thor. Hiddleston reacted to his Thor audition clip on Jimmy Fallon’s show in November 2019 and said that he “auditioned for the first Thor film ten years ago in 2009” and thought that he was auditioning for “an interesting part in an interesting movie.”

Hiddleston ultimately got selected to play Loki in Branagh’s Thor movie.

After debuting in the MCU in the 2024 movie Deadpool & Wolverine, Tatum has made waves as his character, Gambit. The Step Up actor is now slated to reprise his role in Avengers: Doomsday.
