The newest edition of The Conjuring is upon us, and should provide a much needed shot in the arm of the lagging box office. And the pro-shot version of Hamilton is finally getting its long awaited theatrical release, so if you’re seeing an uptick in theater kids at your local cinema, there’s a good reason for that. Otherwise, there are a bunch of new indies to check out - read on about them below.

The films listed are from studios other than the “Big Five” - Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., Walt Disney Pictures, and Columbia Pictures. Note that some of the movies listed are in their first week or two of limited release in the USA, so it may take them a few more weeks (or months) to show up in your local arthouse theater or on VOD. Twinless

The Baltimorons

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance
Plot: A newly sober man's Christmas Eve dental emergency leads to an unexpected romance with his older dentist as they explore Baltimore together.
What you should know: Won the Narrative Spotlight Audience Award at SXSW 2025.

The Threesome



Stars: Zoey Deutch, Jonah Hauer-King, Ruby Cruz, Jaboukie Young-White

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance
Plot: A young man's perennial crush leads him into an unexpected threesome, he thinks it's his ultimate fantasy come true. When the fantasy ends, all three are left with sobering real-world consequences, to take responsibility for their actions.
What you should know: Logan Lerman and Phoebe Dynevor were originally set to star.

Preparation for the Next Life



Stars: Sebiye Behtiyar, Fred Hechinger, Alicher Adill, Dralla Aierken
Writer: Martyna Majok, Atticus Lish
Director: Bing Liu
Genre: Drama
Plot: A Uyghur woman, trained by her military father, migrates to NYC where she finds herself laboring in Chinatown's underground kitchens. She fatefully encounters a young American soldier who just returned from three tours in the Middle East.
What you should know: Bing Liu also directed 2018’s Minding the Gap.

The Legend of Hei 2

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Family
Plot: The film tells the story of a "new mission" from the Monster Hall. Faced with a series of mysteries, Xiaohei and his senior sister Luye embark on a new adventure to find the truth.
What you should know: Follows 2019’s The Legend of Hei.

Riefenstahl



Writer/Director: Andres Veiel
Genre: Documentary
Storyline: Explores Leni Riefenstahl's artistic legacy and her complex ties to the Nazi regime, juxtaposing her self-portrayal with evidence suggesting awareness of the regime's atrocities.
What you should know: Won the Cinema & Arts Award at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.

The Cut



Stars: Orlando Bloom, Catriona Balfe, John Turturro, Clare Dunne

Genre: Thriller
Plot: A retired boxer returns to the ring for one last shot at the title but only if he can make the weight. Holed up in a room in Las Vegas he embarks on an intensive and illegal weight cut program with an unscrupulous trainer.
What you should know: Orlando Bloom lost 52 pounds in three months to prepare for his role.

Linda Linda Linda (Re-release)

The American Southwest

Storyline: Documentary
Plot: Narrated by Quannah Chasinghorse, an adventurous journey down the Colorado River that explores the region's extraordinary wildlife, cultural history, and uncertain future.
What you should know: Made in association with Natives Outdoors, the film highlights the region's deep cultural history and the crucial need to better manage the river for both wildlife and society to thrive.

Expedition: Greenland



Writer/Director: Clay Croft
Genre: Documentary
Storyline: A daring team of seven embarks on the pursuit of being the first to traverse Greenland's unexplored ice sheet.
What you should know: Clay Croft previously directed Expedition: Overland, about Alaska and the Yukon.
Where to watch: In theaters; available VOD on September 23rd
