The Calgary Flames had a notable omission from their 24-player roster for rookie camp.
Highly touted defenceman Zayne Parekh, selected ninth overall in the 2024 NHL Draft, will not attend the team’s upcoming prospects training camp for precautionary reasons, the team announced Wednesday.
Flames GM Craig Conroy said Monday that the 19-year-old defenceman is “still working through his injury from the summer, but he has been skating.” Conroy and the team expect Parekh to be a full participant in main camp that begins on Sept. 18.
Parekh had 33 goals and 107 points in 61 games for the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit in the 2024-25 season. He added two goals and nine points in five playoff games.
The Nobleton, Ont. native made his NHL debut in the Flames’ regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Kings and scored his first career goal.
Though Parekh will be out, 24 other Flames youngsters will get their chance to make an impression at the prospects camp, which begins on Wednesday. The roster includes forward Sam Honzek and defenceman Hunter Brzustewicz, both of whom made their NHL debuts with the club last season.
As part of the camp, the Flames prospects will play two games against the Oilers and their rookie-camp roster. The first will be in Edmonton on Friday, then the two sides will face off again in Calgary on Sunday to conclude the camp.
