Yungblud and Ozzy Osbourne, 2025

Yungblud has shared the best advice that late Black Sabbath icon Ozzy Osbourne ever gave him.

During a recent appearance on Steve-O’s Wild Ride! podcast, he touched on his relationship with Ozzy and recalled some sage advice the late metal pioneer had given him.

He said that while it might seem a “passive statement”, it eventually took on a lot of meaning to him personally. “The most beautiful thing he ever said to me was, ‘Never compromise. They’ll get it later,'” he said.

Elsewhere, he shed light on why the two got on so well, explaining that people often had an issue with his explosive energy. “People find it hard to believe that I’m actually fucking like this all the time,” he said.

“And after kicking it with Sharon, she said he saw a little bit of himself in me, not because we made the same music [but] because we’re fucking a bit nuts.”

It echoes comments he previously made to NME about the impact that Ozzy has had on his career. “Ozzy was a character in my life who was a reflection of everything I went through,” he told us.

“I was always a bit over the top. I was always seen to be a bit crazy. I was always seen to be a bit loud, but when some people saw that as a negative, Ozzy would provide me with the hope that there was an avenue for someone like me in the world.

“From such a young age, he really inspired me. Then, to know him as a friend towards the end, to know his heart, and to know Sharon Osbourne… I really started to understand that they did things their way. It’s always been inspirational because, for me, the biggest enemy to any artist or anything is the phrase, ‘This is just how it’s done’. That’s a cop out. ‘This is how it’s done’ was once an innovative idea that got stale.

Elsewhere in his conversation with Steve O, Yungblud said that he met Ozzy and Sharon through Kelly Osbourne, who he’d asked to feature in the music video for his 2022’s ‘The Funeral’.

While she declined because she was out on tour with Sid Wilson and Slipknot at the time,  she put Yungblud in contact with her parents, who were in Los Angeles and eventually starred in the video.

“You know when people say ‘Don’t meet your heroes’? Ozzy, my whole life, has always been my North Star because I’ve just been mental,” he said. “I’ve been crazy and fucking out there and he was accepted for his madness and he was loved for his madness.”

Last night (September 7), Yungblud paid tribute to him at the 2025 VMAs. Kicking off with a cover of his solo hit ‘Crazy Train’ backed by guitarist Nuno Bettencourt, he later slowed things down with his celebrated and Ozzy-approved cover of Black Sabbath‘s ‘Changes’.

Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry later joined him to take on ‘Mama, I’m Coming Home’, prompting Ariana Grande to look on astonished at the vocals.

Yungblud was a part of the ‘Back To The Beginning’ Black Sabbath farewell show in Birmingham in July, an event that took on extra poignancy when Osbourne died less than three weeks later. Yungblud led a supergroup that also included Bettencourt, as well as II from Sleep Token and Adam Wakeman of Ozzy Osbourne’s solo band.

They performed the Sabbath ballad ‘Changes’, and after Osbourne’s death, Yungblud vowed to play the song at every show “for the rest of my life”, adding: ““To sing this song for you at an event surrounded by legends inspired by you to a crowd who loved you was truly my life’s greatest honour.”
