Billy Flynn reflects on how Cane is different from Chad DiMera
In a conversation with Soap Opera Digest, Flynn shared how he’s settling into his new role as Cane Ashby. He explained that he’s enjoying the experience and discussed the differences between his soap opera characters, Cane and Chad. “Chad was a character who, from a very young age, came from wealth. He was kind of arrogant and cocky, but at the same time, he wore his heart on his sleeve. Whereas Cane, I feel like everything’s kept a little bit closer, and he carries a little bit more shame and guilt for what happened in the past with Lily.”
In addition, Flynn believes his role as Cane Ashby draws some inspiration from Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby. Explaining the comparison, he added, “Where it’s like he’s trying to make up for lost time and he’s created this thing to prove that he’s worthy. And at the same time, he’s trying to figure out, really, who he is and what it is he wants, and nothing’s going according to plan.”
He explained that it took him several years to fully grasp his portrayal of Chad, and he thinks it might be a similar process with Cane. He said, “I’m going to be learning about the character and figuring things out for the next however many years. I feel like I didn’t get a grasp on my character at DAYS, Chad DiMera, for like, four years.”
