Just a couple of weeks ago, Xbox brought Gears of War: Reloaded to the PS5, marking the first time Microsoft’s iconic third-person cover shooter was playable on a PlayStation console. However, it seems Marcus Fenix’s debut on Sony’s console wasn’t too popular with PlayStation players.

According to data gathered by Alinea Analytics, Gears of War: Reloaded saw 1.3 million downloads in August across Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox. Considering the updated remake released during the last week of the month, this is a decent outing for the game.

Gears of War: Reloaded’s PS5 release is not too popular with players

One million of those downloads of Gears of War: Reloaded came from Xbox players. As the game launched on Xbox Game Pass, this isn’t too surprising. However, only 241,000 PS5 players downloaded the game, making up 18.1% of overall downloads. In comparison, Forza Horizon 5’s PS5 release had nearly six times as many downloads, hitting over 1.5 million less than a week after launch.

Although its download numbers for PS5 are fairly low, that doesn’t necessarily correlate to the quality of the game. When Gears of War: Reloaded was released in August, its reception was mostly favorable. According to the review aggregate site Metacritic, it garnered an average review score of 79 across 54 critic reviews. In our review, we gave it a 9 out of 10.

“Ultimately, Gears of War: Reloaded is a great way for PlayStation owners to get into the series or for returning players to scratch that nostalgia itch,” says our review. With cover shooters not nearly as en vogue in 2025, it’s nice to see that the game that kick-started the trend is still a delight.”

Gears of War: Reloaded is available now on the PS Store for $39.99. It is PS5 Pro enhanced, taking advantage of PlayStation Super Spectral Resolution (PSSR) to improve shadow and reflection quality.
