Debris has been found from a medical transport plane that disappeared off the coast of Massachusetts with six people on board.

The Gulfstream G-100 lost contact with air traffic controllers shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday while flying from Bermuda to Boston.

The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed Saturday night that search crews had discovered wreckage from the aircraft off Nantucket.

“Search crews located a debris field confirmed to be from the aircraft off the coast of Nantucket,” the Coast Guard said in a statement.

Ships, helicopters and aircraft continued searching for survivors overnight.

The plane, operated by Latitude Air Ambulances, had departed Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport shortly before midnight and was scheduled to land at Boston Logan International Airport around 1:30 a.m.

Four Canadians and two Bermudians were aboard, according to authorities. They included two pilots, two medical staff members, a patient and the patient’s relative.

Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft dropping rapidly from around 24,000 feet to 11,000 feet before contact was lost.

Radio transmissions reported by the Boston Globe also indicated the aircraft was experiencing serious problems shortly before disappearing.

“You’re coming in blind? Is that what you said?” an air traffic controller asked the pilot. “Are you declaring an emergency, or no?”

The pilot’s response could not be heard clearly.

The controller later confirmed that the aircraft had declared an emergency.

Emergency crews were initially told to prepare for an incoming aircraft experiencing an “electrical issue.”

Minutes later, dispatchers reported that the plane had lost both radio and radar contact.

Relatives of those aboard have been notified.

The Coast Guard said the search remained underway and that further information would be released Sunday.
