WNBA Takes Notice After Flau’jae Johnson Matches Feat Previously Reached by Breanna Stewart in Seattle Loss

With every passing game, Flau’jae Johnson continues to prove that she is among the WNBA’s brightest young stars. After her latest performance against the Los Angeles Sparks, she has added her name to the history books with one of the greatest Seattle Storm players ever.

Although the Storm were not able to snap their losing streak and endured another defeat, Johnson proved to the world that she is a star in the making. Starting for the Storm, she dropped 14 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists. Johnson became only the second Seattle Storm rookie since Breanna Stewart to drop a 10 + points, 10 + rebounds, and 5+ assist performance. The WNBA’s official X page also acknowledged this on its official handle.

Alongside that, she is the only rookie with multiple double-doubles (2) this season. The other double-double came in their 79-56 loss to the Dallas Wings, where she delivered 16 points and 10 rebounds.   

Flau’jae Johnson, selected eighth overall in the 2026 WNBA Draft by the Golden State Valkyries, was traded to the Seattle Storm on draft night. And since arriving in Seattle, she has stepped comfortably into her professional basketball role, quickly earning continuous floor time from head coach Sonia Raman. And of course, she has made good use of those opportunities, emerging as one of the brightest young players on the roster while currently averaging 11.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game.

Sadly, these performances haven’t really translated into wins for the Storm. They currently sit with a 3-11 record and are second from the bottom in the combined league standings. In fact, their recent 88-83 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks marked their seventh consecutive defeat, further extending what has been a difficult stretch for the franchise.

Waiting for them next are the Golden State Valkyries, who hold a 7-5 record. Storm will be hoping Flau’jae Johnson can continue her impressive rookie form, as that is what will propel them to a victory against the Valkyries and help them snap out of their losing streak.

Flau’jae Johnson Remains Optimistic Amid Storm Struggles

Sitting at the bottom of the West after 14 games, things are not looking great for the Storm. The only two players that are really standing out for them are Johnson and Natisha Hiedeman. Johnson has not just been a great addition on the offense, but she is also contributing with her defense, as she has 15 blocks already this season.

Despite the difficult stretch and disappointing results, rookie Flau’jae Johnson has maintained a remarkably optimistic outlook amidst the storm.

In a video shared by Arielle Orsuto on X, Johnson reacted to the Seattle Storm’s losing streak.

“I’m a winner. I do what it takes to win. And I’m just learning more about the process,” she said. “You know what they say, ‘no rain, no flowers.’ And I feel like, as long as we’re growing, it’s going to happen. It’s a process.”

While it is her rookie season, Flau’ jae has already noticed something about the Storm organization that makes them special.

“The thing about this organization is that every day is the next play mentality. It’s good vibes, good people around. Amazing vets. Everybody is trying to get better every day,” the rookie added. “These people that I’m around, they’re so special. All we are trying to do is build, build, build every day. It makes me believe in our process. So, I’m a winner. I’m going to figure out how to win, and we’re going to figure out how to win.”

Johnson came out of college as one of the top prospects. She is undoubtedly a great basketball player, but her electric energy is what makes her a special team player. While her team is struggling, Johnson has decided to look at the positives and vows to work hard and get the team back to winning ways. Whether that happens against the Valkyries is something that we will only know on June 12.
