Connor Hellebuyck’s team-imposed suspension is scheduled to expire on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, presenting the Winnipeg Jets with a complex roster decision as their star goaltender remains without a trade partner. The suspension was enacted under NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement Article 15.13, subsection c, following Hellebuyck’s decision to skip training camp without team permission.
The holdout has already carried a significant financial burden for the 2025 Hart Trophy winner. By remaining away from the team through the start of the 2026-27 season, Hellebuyck has forfeited between $720,000 and $900,000 in salary during the 2026-27 season holdout. While the three-time Vezina Trophy recipient (2020, 2024, 2025) remains one of the league’s premier players, his looming return to the active roster creates a logistical and emotional hurdle for a team that has found its footing in his absence.
Despite his absence, Hellebuyck remains one of the league's most decorated goaltenders.
Locker Room Dynamics and On-Ice Stability
The Jets have navigated the early weeks of the season with surprising stability, posting a 4-2-2 record through their first eight games. This early success has shifted the leverage in favor of General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff, who has thus far resisted pressure to move Hellebuyck for a diminished return.
However, reintroducing a player who actively sought an exit could disrupt the current chemistry. On Oct. 17, Winnipeg captain Adam Lowry acknowledged that the situation would require a “water under the bridge” approach if Hellebuyck returns to the locker room. Lowry noted that specific “conversations” would be necessary to smooth over the tension caused by the training camp holdout and the subsequent suspension.
There is also the question of Hellebuyck’s conditioning and value. While some reports indicate the Jets could potentially pay the goaltender to stay home even after the suspension expires to avoid distraction, Hellebuyck likely requires practice repetitions to maintain his trade value and professional form.
Trade Market Landscape
Despite the high asking price, interest in the decorated goaltender persists across the league. According to reporting from The Fourth Period, the Buffalo Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, and Utah Mammoth have been identified as potential destinations. Each of these clubs has different levels of cap flexibility, which remains a primary obstacle in finalizing a deal.
As the Oct. 23 deadline approaches, the Jets must decide whether to reintegrate Hellebuyck into the daily environment or continue the standoff. Until a trade is finalized, the team faces the reality of managing a disgruntled superstar who, by the rules of the CBA, will soon be eligible to reclaim his place in the Winnipeg locker room.
