Earlier this week, Paramount+ and CBS canceled Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, just as it wrapped up production on Season 2. However, Star Trek alum William Shatner, known for playing the iconic Captain Kirk in the 1966 original series, is not happy about the cancellation.
On Tuesday, March 24, the veteran actor took to X (formerly Twitter) and posted a series of messages, expressing his disappointment and defending the franchise’s modern take.
In his first post, the Boston Legal actor explained what, in his view, the franchise’s scope is. Along with existing in a world of “unimaginable possibilities of exploration and human endeavor,” the actor believes that it also exists in the “fantasy of human beings.” He explained how the franchise explores different aspects of human emotions “physically, mentally, and morally.” While he was looking forward to seeing more of Starfleet Academy, he said, “It’s with sorrow that I hear about the cancellation of the new Star Trek series.”
The Emmy-winning actor then followed up with a few more posts. In his next post, he noted that his own Star Trek series was “condemned” when it was aired on television. He added that several southern stations pulled an episode off the air because of an “objectionable” kiss. Shatner said that in today’s “vernacular,” his show would also be dubbed as “woke.” He believes nothing has changed since then.
In his third post, The Twilight Zone actor recalled that both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Enterprise also received “hate” for being different from the original series. “Star Trek is different for everyone,” he added.
With his fourth and final post, Shatner responded to the comments. He admitted that he has not seen the entire show but has seen a few clips.
