The termination of Kyle Sandilands' contract with Australian Radio Network (ARN) came as 'no surprise' to those in the entertainment world.
The news, announced early today by Sandilands himself, was mostly a case of ARN, the owner of KIIS FM, having nowhere else to go, having dug itself into a hole in the almost four weeks since the spectacular fallout between the two radio stars live on air.
Among those who were unsurprised the company pulled the trigger and terminated the reported $100 million contract was respected entertainment reporter Peter Ford, who told nine.com.au the only surprise was the timing of the announcement.
"The only thing that surprised me was that the announcement didn't come out yesterday," Ford said.
"The inside word was that it was going to happen around about 5pm yesterday. When that didn't happen, I was surprised by that.
"Some people had suggested maybe there's settlement talks going on. Other people had put it to me, 'No they want to hold off because they don't want him venting on Australian Idol'.
"Certainly, if you see the doorstop interview he did and you see him on Idol [on Tuesday night] … obviously, he didn't know. He was still in the dark.

"And then, obviously, early this morning they gave him that news."
Another who is unlikely to be surprised is Craig Bruce, Sandilands' former boss turned talent coach, radio consultant and podcaster.
It was Bruce, then the content director at the Austereo network, who convinced Sandilands and Jackie 'O' Henderson to switch from their Hot30 afternoon show to the coveted breakfast slot on 2DayFM in Sydney in 2005.
He went on to work with them for the next decade, helping them cement their partnership before they moved to KIIS in 2014.
Bruce predicted in an interview with nine.com.au just one week ago that the Kyle and Jackie O Show would not return to the airwaves and the matter would end up in court.
"I think they'll go to court. They'll try a settlement where they can retrieve some of the money from their contract, that's going to take a couple of years," Bruce said.

Bruce, who presents the Game Changers podcast, which analyses and celebrates the radio and audio industry, was among the first to share Sandilands' statement on Instagram this morning, announcing his contract had been terminated.
Just last week, Bruce told nine.com.au he does not see a day when Sandilands and Henderson would work together again.
"I think there's a world where we won't hear either of them, together or separately, on the radio for two or three years," he said.
While Ford agreed today they will not work together again, he thinks Sandilands will be broadcasting sooner rather than later.
"He needs to be on air. He is like Dracula needing blood," Ford told nine.com.au.
"He would never walk away from this, and I don't know how he's going to cope if this goes on for years and if he is prevented from working."
While he thinks it is unlikely another station would take him on, even if they could afford him, he says there is no reason he can't start his own podcast – which he says would not breach any non-compete clause that might be in place.
"I do think that the subscription podcasting is the way that he'll go. It will give him the outlet to broadcast and could be very viable financially," Ford said.
Sandilands this morning released a statement saying ARN had terminated his contract, and he would be pursuing the matter legally.
"ARN has just announced that they've terminated my contract," he said via a statement his manager Bruno Bouchet shared with nine.com.au.
"I don't accept it. My lawyers told them last week this would be invalid. And guess what? It is.
"I've got a contract until 2034. I've got rights under that contract. And ARN hasn't honoured the contract. So, it's over to my lawyers."

It was quickly followed by a statement from ARN.
Kyle Sandilands' statement in full
"ARN has just announced that they've terminated my contract. I don't accept it.
My lawyers told them last week this would be invalid. And guess what? It is.
Let me tell you what actually happened here. Jackie and I had a blue on air. That's it. The kind of thing we've done a hundred times in 25 years.
And ARN took the situation and decided to try and burn the place down. They sacked Jackie. They suspended me. They wouldn't even let me pick up the phone to call her or anyone else on the show.
Then – and this is the bit that gets me – once they'd made it impossible for the show to go on, they turn around and say, "You didn't fix it. You're fired!"
I said sorry to Jackie the night of our blow-up. And when I said I was sorry to Jackie, I meant it. I still mean it. But it doesn't mean I will stand by while I am separated from the people who've listened to me every morning for 25 years.
Before they suspended me, ARN said, "Let us handle it," and I listened. In the two weeks since, I've done everything ARN asked.
I said, put me back on air. I'll work with Jackie. I'll work with someone else. Whatever you need. Every single time – "no." They weren't interested. They didn't want to fix this.
They thought they saw a chance to get out of the contract they signed with me a year ago, and they ran with it.
ARN knew exactly what they were getting when they signed my deal. They've worked with me for over a decade. They knew how I work, they knew the show, and they were happy to pay for it – because I delivered. Number one ratings. Year after year. Hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for their business. I held up my end. I always have.

So, you tell me – why would ARN prefer to breach a contract and pay the legal consequences rather than honour the contract and pay me to do what I do best? That's the bit that doesn't make sense.
I've got a contract until 2034. I've got rights under that contract. And ARN hasn't honoured the contract.
So, it's over to my lawyers.
To the people who tune in every morning – you lot are the reason I've done this for 25 years. You didn't get a say in this. Neither did I. But my lawyers will. I'm not done. Not by a long way."
ARN's statement in full
"ARN Media Limited advises that it has issued a notice of termination of contract to Mr Kyle Sandilands and Quasar Media Services Pty Ltd (Quasar Media).
As a result, the Kyle and Jackie O show will no longer be presented. This decision follows the Company's ASX announcement on 3 March 2026 which outlined that ARN had provided written notice to Mr Sandilands and Quasar Media stating that it considered Mr Sandilands' behaviour during the broadcast of 20 February 2026 to constitute serious misconduct and a breach of ARN's services agreement with Quasar Media, under which Mr Sandilands presents the Kyle and Jackie O show.
As noted in the 3 March 2026 announcement, Mr Sandilands was given 14 days to remedy the breach."
