The premiere episode of the DCU series Lanterns ended on a massive cliffhanger and seems to have all the makings of a steadily paced murder mystery. However, Kyle Chandler, who plays the iconic Green Lantern Hal Jordan in the series, has recently said that this is not the case, stating that the show is anything but a “slow burn.”

Kyle Chandler confirms that DCU’s Lanterns won’t be a ‘slow burn’ series

In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, the Friday Night Lights star said that Lanterns is going to defy fans’ expectations about its pace by showcasing high stakes in every other episode going forward.

“We didn’t have all the scripts starting out,” he noted, adding, “They started coming in…it’s not a slow burn. It goes from one world into another, and grows into that.”

During the discussion, Kyle Chandler also shared his thoughts on the explosive ending of the first episode of Lanterns. While he shied away from giving away any plot details, Chandler urged viewers to “watch and find out to make their own decision.” He added, “I think it turns out great. It’s an exciting poker game.”

Taking place primarily in 2016, the debut episode of Lanterns concluded by momentarily switching to the present day and revealing that Hal Jordan had died, supposedly through a gunshot to the head. As well as showing his body in a frozen state in the harsh wilderness of Rushville, the episode’s final moments also revealed that Jordan did not have his ring. However, the season premiere did not disclose who had killed Jordan, who had taken his ring, or if the scene really is what it appears to be.

The remaining seven episodes of the season will air on Sunday nights at 9 PM ET, with the finale scheduled for October 4, 2026.
