At the Toronto International Film Festival, Ryan Reynolds spoke about who leaked the Deadpool test footage. He explained how the 2014 incident sparked a major fan response that convinced 20th Century Fox to greenlight the film.

Ryan Reynolds admits to leaking Deadpool’s test footage

Speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival about the leaked Deadpool footage, Ryan Reynolds said, “Yes, I cheated a little, but I think I was onto something that people would be interested in. And I’m grateful that I listened to that instinct, and I’m grateful that I did the wrong thing in that moment.” Filmmaker Tim Miller produced the footage in 2012, creating a CGI version of Reynolds as Deadpool. When the footage surfaced online, fan enthusiasm was immediate, which pushed Fox to give the project a green light within 24 hours. “Some a–hole leaks it online and I’m like, you know, looking at the guy in the mirror brushing my teeth,” Reynolds said, finally admitting he was behind the leak. “I [was] like, ‘Dude, what have you done? This could be punishable by law!’ But the internet forced the studio to say, ‘We’re gonna make this movie.’”

Reynolds had played Deadpool previously in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and continued to pursue a standalone project despite studio hesitation around an R-rated superhero film. “And Deadpool’s a fringe character. People didn’t really know who he was, and I loved him. I was obsessed with it because I loved that he knew he was in a comic book movie,” he explained.

Reynolds previously sidestepped direct responsibility for the leak. In 2016, he joked that he was only “70 percent sure” it wasn’t him. Two years later, he marked the “Leak-iversery” on social media, writing that he was still “searching for the bastard who leaked our test footage.”

Deadpool grossed over $780 million worldwide on a $58 million budget. The film broke R-rated box office records and led to successful sequels, including Deadpool 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine.
