Weather Authority Alert Day: Damaging wind gusts and strong to severe thunderstorms

3 weeks ago 2

Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia are in the path of what could be very strong to severe storms. The Weather Authority will be closely monitoring the radar from very early Thursday morning through early afternoon as these storms move across the area from the west to the east.

These storms are being pushed in due to a cold front, and once the front crosses our area, the severe weather threat moves out with it.

We will likely see a Tornado Watch issued Thursday for our area.

Showers began after midnight with storms arriving early Thursday morning and moving west to east.

Based on current model timing: The Weather Authority Alert Day will start around 7 a.m. for Southeast Georgia and continue through around 2 p.m. across Northeast Florida.

The heavy rain will be between:

Southeast Georgia: 7 a.m.-1 p.m.

Northeast Florida: 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Rainfall: Most will see around 1 inch of rain with some areas receiving 2-3 inches near and along I-75 and Southeast Georgia.

The main hazards will be strong to severe thunderstorms with gusty wind and locally heavy rainfall. Isolated tornadoes will also be possible with a low hail threat.

Thursday’s temperatures will be in the 80s, which is notable because heat fuels these storms.

Behind the cold front, drier and cooler conditions await as well as another beautiful weekend.
