Kicking off proceedings last night (Sunday 7), she interrupted as host LL Cool J delivered an opening monologue with a pre-taped video, then launched into a rendition of the track which featured an kitschy ’80s-inspired set, an era-accurate saxophone solo courtesy of Kenny G, and a dance breakdown that’s left fans comparing her to Janet Jackson.

Jealous Type‘ track was nominated for Song of the Summer at last night’s ceremony, with Doja taking home an award in the Best K-Pop category as a featured artist alongside Raye for ‘Born Again’ by Blackpink’s Lisa, who Doja previously teamed up with for a performance at the Oscars.

Back in April, the ‘Say So’ artist began teasing her new era, and since then has been steadily sharing snippets of the project. Last month, she hosted a surprise album-listening preview party and later announced the record is due for release on September 26. You can pre-order /pre-save here).

In a recent interview with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe, Doja shared her experience working with former fun. member and Bleachers leader Jack Antonoff on ‘Vie’, saying “things fell together really naturally”.

She previously shared that the album will be more of a “pop-driven” version of her previous LP ‘Scarlet‘, and went on to explain how Antonoff had been instrumental in shaping that sound, saying: “He’s just been such a wonderful person to work with,” adding: “But yeah, I think it’s just been nice to play.”

‘Scarlet’ scored a three-star review from NME: “It all adds up to an overlong, slightly repetitive but ultimately compelling album of two halves… Still, by this stage, there’s no doubt that Doja has made her point – that she doesn’t owe us anything but to be herself.”

Elsewhere at the 2025 MTV VMAs, Ariana Grande took home the night’s biggest award, Video Of The Year’ for ‘Brighter Days Ahead’, while Lady Gaga was crowned Artist Of The Year, Rosé and Bruno Mars won Song Of The Year for ‘APT.’ and Mariah Carey was awarded the Video Vanguard award for her historic career.

Yungblud and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry have also paid tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne with a touching performance. Check out the full list of winners here.
