Rian Johnson might not have “saved” the whodunit genre, but he sure as hell revived it. 2019’s Knives Out, with its clever script, incredible ensemble cast, and complete reconfiguring of how a mystery film should work, made Johnson's movie a breath of fresh air and proof that original ideas can still thrive in theaters. 2022’s Glass Onion improved upon Johnson’s formula, paring down the cast, but finding even more ways to upend expectations with the sequel.
