Fenerbahce president Ali Koc has revealed the ‘unacceptable’ reason he decided to sack legendary manager Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho, 62, lost his job in Istanbul last week after just over one year in charge of the Turkish giants.

Fenerbahce pulled the plug on Mourinho’s tenure two days after they were beaten in the champions League play-offs by Benfica.

Mourinho, who is now being linked with a sensational return to the Premier League, guided Fenerbahce to a second-place finish last season.

However, his reign was full of controversy, with The Special One repeatedly blasting the standard of officiating in Turkey and recently criticising Fenerbahce’s transfer business.

A deflating European defeat to Benfica appeared to be the final straw for Fenerbahce bosses but club president Koc says it was in fact Mourinho’s ‘unacceptable’ style of football that cost him his job.

Speaking to Turkish outlet Hurriyet, Koc said: ‘Why did we let go of Mourinho? It was a bitter parting. Our chemistry was great and just bringing him here was a big success.

‘But we needed to play more dominant football, scoring 99 goals and earning 99 points is in our DNA.

‘Getting knocked out by Benfica wasn’t the issue. But how we went out was unacceptable. It felt like the same dull football from last year would continue.

‘This kind of football may work in Europe, but in Turkey we need to dominate. We believed this squad could play better without him.’

Following his sacking from Fenerbahce, Mourinho has been linked with a sensational return to the Premier League.

Mourinho, who has managed ten clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham, is believed to be an option for Nottingham Forest if they decide to part ways with Nuno Espírito Santo.

West Ham have also been linked with the Portuguese legend following a difficult start to the season under Graham Potter.

Discussing Mourinho’s possible return to English football, ex-Germany midfielder Didi Hamann told Adventure Gamers: ‘He hasn’t managed in the Premier League for a while now.

‘He’s had a few stops and things haven’t really worked out as he expected. But for one or two seasons, I can still see him performing magic.

‘Is he as successful as he was 10 years ago? No, but for a year or two? Yes, I’d like to see it. I still think he has one or two good years left in him. I wouldn’t rule out him being successful.’

Mourinho has also been linked with Scottish giants Rangers but Hamann ‘cannot see’ that move materialising.

‘I’m not sure if he’d go there,’ Hamann added. ‘Obviously, only he can decide, but then again, people may have thought he wouldn’t go to Turkey.

‘I can’t really see it. I can’t really see Mourinho in Scotland. But then again, he has surprised us before, and he might surprise us again.’
