UFC Shares Medical Update on Raoni Barcelos After Scary Knockout Loss at UFC Vegas 121

Raoni Barcelos’ first main event of his career took a harrowing turn at UFC Vegas 121. During a vicious battle with Raul Rosas Jr., the Brazilian lost consciousness, apparently from a slam in the opening minutes of the fifth round. The doctor rushed into the Octagon, and Barcelos was subsequently transported to the hospital on a stretcher. Now, the UFC has finally shared an update on his condition. 

The promotion’s official website has conveyed the Brazilian’s current condition.

“Following his fight tonight, Raoni Barcelos was immediately transported to a Level 1 trauma center for evaluation,” UFC’s statement read. “The hospital medical team conducted a CT scan and comprehensive assessment, and he is currently being monitored. Barcelos is stable, alert, and responsive, with full movement. He will remain under medical supervision. We will provide updates on his condition as they become available.” 

Going by the UFC’s update, the seasoned veteran appears to be out of immediate danger. However, the specific details of his injury remain unclear. Hopefully, the promotion will share the medical details soon, which would clarify Barcelos’ actual condition. But one thing is clear: the Brazilian will be under medical suspension for quite a while until he properly recovers.

Another notable detail is that the UFC’s statement mentions Barcelos was transported to a Level 1 trauma center. This designation indicates the promotion sent the Brazilian to a top-tier emergency medical facility. At a Level 1 trauma center, Barcelos would be treated by expert doctors trained to handle exactly this kind of critical situation. 

Following the UFC’s revelation, more good news began surfacing around Raoni Barcelos’ condition. His head coach, Davi Ramos, also stated on social media that the 39-year-old is currently out of danger and responding well.

“Hey guys, Raoni is fine, everything is alright, everyone can stay calm,” Ramos said in Portuguese. “He just went to do the tomography now, but everything is fine; we are here waiting for him. Everyone can stay calm, thanks.”  

At the same time, prominent UFC journalist Ariel Helwani also confirmed on X that Barcelos underwent CT scans and is currently able to “speak and move his body” without any constraints. 

For Barcelos, dealing with this latest scare would be genuinely difficult. The 39-year-old was previously knocked out by Umar Nurmagomedov in 2023. However, this recent defeat unfolded under far more horrific circumstances. Plus, with Barcelos turning 40 next on May next year, serious questions about his longevity in the sport are bound to follow.

Still, he’s not the first fighter to experience such a scare.

At UFC Vegas 109 on August 9, 2025, bantamweight prospect Elijah Smith landed a similarly brutal slam, lifting Toshiomi Kazama up and driving him headfirst into the canvas. The Japanese fighter was knocked out instantly and lay motionless for several minutes before being transported to a local hospital for a precautionary CT scan, which ultimately came back negative. 

Now, as Barcelos navigates the toughest phase of his professional life, Raul Rosas Jr. has sent his prayers his way.

But before making his bid for that next big fight, Rosas Jr. took a moment to send prayers to his opponent, Raoni Barcelos, who’s currently undergoing medical treatment.

“Man, first, I want to say everybody tonight please pray for Raoni Barcelos,” Rosas said in the post-fight Octagon interview. “Man, he is a warrior; it takes two to tango.”

Tonight’s fight will be memorable for Rosas because Barcelos pushed him to the edge of his ability. Following him, other UFC stars have also poured in their well wishes for the Brazilian.

“Thoughts and prayers out to Raoni Barcelos! amazing fight but scary ending,” former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman wrote on X.

Following him, former light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill joined in and sent his thoughts and prayers to the UFC Vegas 121 fighter.

“ Thats some scary stuff!!!!” Hill wrote on X.

Last but not least, UFC featherweight contender Arnold Allen also reacted to Raoni Barcelos’ brutal knockout, writing, “Is Barcelos up? That was scary man” on the same platform.

Raoni Barcelos’ exact medical condition remains under wraps. Assuming the test results show no adverse effects, the veteran bantamweight should soon regroup and return even stronger, ready to showcase a performance reminiscent of his masterclass against Payton Talbott.
