Malik Nabers has been vocal about the value of playing alongside veterans like Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. “Having a guy like Russell with that experience, Super Bowl champion, he knows how he knows what to do right,” he said. The WR is eager to make big plays for both quarterbacks. He commended Russ’s leadership, support, and impact on younger players, including himself. But as the 2025 season approaches, tensions within the locker room have started to surface. And a crack appears between Nabers and Winston.

Jordan Raanan reported on Big Blue Film Room that Nabers and Winston have occasionally clashed on the field. “The other day, Jameis Winston and Malik Nabers kind of going back and forth, getting very animated in conversation after practice. There are a lot of strong personalities. Very interesting to see if it works and it fits,” he explained. Yet, he noted there’s also potential in that fiery duo, suggesting it may fuel big moments during the game.

In a past interview, Nabers credited Winston with helping him stay sharp physically and mentally, emphasizing the quarterback’s role in keeping him focused on health and growth. He believes that with Winston and Wilson leading the offense, the Giants can find success, and that confidence fuels his energy. So when questions arose about his status, he quickly dismissed them.

Nabers called his missed time precautionary after skipping spring workouts with a toe issue and briefly exiting a summer practice with a shoulder scare. Despite those setbacks, he praised Wilson: “I think just having him knowing he’s been through it already, been through the back half, been through the front half, been through the good, been through the bad, and learned how to be steady throughout the whole season.”

Still, the Giants’ quarterback room doesn’t inspire much confidence. In Mike Sando’s annual quarterback rankings for The Athletic, Wilson and the Giants landed in the fourth tier, which groups “an unproven player” or “a veteran who ideally would not start all 17 games.” For Wilson, that raises questions about whether he can stay healthy and effective across a full season.

Russell Wilson must step up to protect his spot

The veteran enters Week 1 as the Giants’ starter when they face the Washington Commanders. Following this, the team will face more rivals, including the Cowboys and the Chiefs. The Athletic’s Dan Duggan says that if Wilson wants to save his starting job, he must secure wins in those games. Duggan noted that while team brass has publicly called Wilson the unquestioned starter, the organization has also invested a first-round pick in Jaxson Dart, who impressed during the preseason.

Duggan drew a direct parallel to 2019, when the Giants initially planned for Eli Manning to keep his role while Daniel Jones developed behind him. After a 0-2 start, Jones took over the game. If the Giants struggle early, Brian Daboll might not hesitate to make a switch, especially since Dart already looks game-ready. “Manning was a franchise icon with far more equity than Wilson, who is on his fourth team in five years. If the Giants stumble against a killer early schedule, they won’t wait long to replace Wilson with Dart, who looked ready in the preseason,” Duggan explained.

Duggan suggested Week 5 against the Saints as a natural transition point, since New Orleans is rebuilding under new head coach Kellen Moore and starting an unproven quarterback in Spencer Rattler. That matchup would provide Dart with a softer landing than facing the NFC East or AFC contenders.

For Wilson, the message is simple. He should win early or risk losing the job. The Giants can’t afford another wasted year at quarterback. And Dart’s presence creates immediate pressure on the veteran.
