Tom Hanks Thriller on Dan Brown’s Bestselling Novel Is Headed to Streaming

Tom Hanks is set to return to Netflix with a globe-trotting mystery built around secret clues, a dangerous conspiracy, and a race against time. The film is the latest chapter in Ron Howard’s screen adaptations of Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon stories, bringing a familiar franchise back to streaming audiences at home.

Tom Hanks-led Inferno to stream on Netflix next month

Netflix will add Inferno to its catalog on October 1 (via What’s on Netflix). Tom Hanks stars as Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, who wakes up in an Italian hospital with his memory scrambled and quickly finds himself chasing clues tied to Dante. Felicity Jones plays Dr. Sienna Brooks, his ally in the race, while Ben Foster’s Bertrand Zobrist plots to release a virus that could wipe out half the world’s population.

Ron Howard directed the big-screen adaptation, with David Koepp handling the script. Irrfan Khan, Omar Sy, Sidse Babett Knudsen, and Ana Ularu also join the cast. The movie reportedly cost $75 million to make and finished its theatrical run with about $220 million worldwide, including $34.3 million from North American theaters, according to Box Office Mojo.

Inferno may have made more than enough to cover its reported budget, but audience and critic reactions landed in very different territory. More than 200,000 IMDb users have pushed the film to a 6.2/10 rating. Rotten Tomatoes is considerably harsher, with a 23% Tomatometer score and a 36% audience score, although CinemaScore polling gave the thriller a B+.

The 2016 release also marked the latest and final chapter of the Robert Langdon movies. Tom Hanks first stepped into the role for The Da Vinci Code in 2006 before returning for Angels & Demons in 2009. Both films currently hold a 6.7/10 rating on IMDb, while their Rotten Tomatoes critic scores are 25% and 36%, respectively.

The film’s reception is anything but one-note. Some fans have enjoyed the European scenery, the fast-moving story, and standout performances, while others feel the breakneck pace leaves the plot muddled and difficult to follow. Others took an even tougher stance, describing the thriller as frantic and lacking the depth needed for its ambitious story to really land.
