The Pacific was a massive undertaking when it debuted in 2010 on HBO. It was executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman, who delivered Band of Brothers, another sweeping war epic that digs into the lives of the men and women who fought in battles during World War II. It is based on the memoirs of US Marines who actually served in the Pacific Theater during World War II, including the engagements fought by the 1st Marine Division, from Guadalcanal to the battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima.
