Washington Monthly, Lady Liberty

When the Washington Monthly’s 2025 College Guide and Rankings were released in August, the top spot wasn’t claimed by Harvard or Yale, perennial champs in U.S. News & World Report’s much better-known rankings. Instead, tiny Berea College in Kentucky topped the list. Why? Berea, the first racially integrated, coeducational college in the South, keeps breaking the mold. While most schools are jacking up prices and aching to attract wealthy students, Berea has been committed to no tuition and minimal debt.

At the Washington Monthly, we are proud to recognize a school like Berea, which demonstrates that small can be powerful. We see ourselves similarly. For 20 years, our College Guide and Rankings have challenged the dominance of larger rankings, even earning praise from former education secretaries. Miguel Cardona calls our rankings a “vital resource for students, parents, and taxpayers alike,” while Arne Duncan states our rankings measure “what really counts.”

Doing this takes money which we need. Can you help us continue our work?
