We all have our go-to sex positions we whip out in the bedroom. There’s sure-fire missionary and laid-back spooning, or the controversial 69.

It’s all well and good when you’re of a similar height, but when there’s more than a foot between you, things get a little trickier.

It’s an issue raised by one woman online who measures in at 5ft 2in while dating a man who is a very tall 6ft 5in. That’s a difference in height equivalent to the length of a domestic cat (minus the tail).

‘Everything we try doesn’t work out at all on furniture, counters, car, you name it, nothing is working,’ she complained. ‘Even during missionary I’m on his chest, we can’t even kiss unless he’s breaking his neck.’

She adds: ‘Anything standing is out the picture, not even doggy style is working out unless I’m stacking like four pillows under me.’

The Reddit post received a lot of attention from others who were facing a similar issue, but there was one position other suggested had answered their height gap sex prayers.

Cowgirl both worked just fine when I was 6ft 1in and dating a 4ft 10in girl,’ commented one. Others agreed it was the ‘perfect’ solution to the problem.

Why does cowgirl work?

There’s no problem with height during cowgirl because your bodies don’t need to line up as they do in positions like missionary.

Alignment problems can occur with positions like missionary (Picture: Getty Images)

‘It removes the need for perfect height alignment,’ Annabelle Knight, sex expert for Lovehoney, tells Metro. ‘The partner on top controls depth, angle, and pace, which makes it easier to find a position that feels good for both people.’

It’s a particular hit with women who like this sex position because they ‘enjoy controlling the pace’ this way, and say it makes them feel ‘so sexy and confident’. One even said it ‘starts their engine’.

In fact, cowgirl had 401,100 internet searches in 2025, showing it’s a classic for a reason.

‘It’s also adaptable,’ adds Annabelle. ‘Instead of bouncing, small grinding or rocking movements can help maintain comfort and consistent stimulation. This is especially useful when one partner is much taller, as it reduces the risk of going too deep or losing rhythm.’

The expert believes another benefit of cowgirl in this instance is communication. ‘Both partners can see each other clearly, so it’s easier to adjust in real time without breaking the mood,’ she says.

‘It also allows for easy access to clitoral stimulation, which is important given that many women need it to reach orgasm.’

Why can height make sex so challenging?

The issue height creates during physical intimacy is one of alignment.

‘A lot of positions rely on hips, pelvises, and torsos lining up comfortably and when there’s a big gap in height, angles can feel off,’ Annabelle adds.

‘If penetrating during sex, it can be be too shallow or too deep, and it can take more physical effort to maintain rhythm. It can also interrupt flow, as couples may need to constantly adjust rather than relax into the moment.’

This makes things like missionary challenging because the natural alignment of hips and torsos is disrupted. ‘This can make the movement feel less fluid or reduce the ability to find a comfortable rhythm,’ she points out.

The same goes for doggy style if the receiving partner’s hips are too high or too low in relation to the penetrating partner.

Other sex positions that work well

Of course, you don’t just want to be having sex in the cowgirl position every single time for the sake of ease, so we’ve got some other suggestions to spice things up.

‘Positions that remove the need for standing alignment or use the environment to support positioning tend to work best,’ Annabelle explains.

Spooning is a strong example, as it naturally aligns both partners in a side-lying position without any need to match height, making it ideal for slower, more controlled movement.’

Seated positions are also a great antidote for a height difference during sex.

‘Things like the lotus remove height differences entirely and instead focus on closeness, eye contact, and steady, connected movement,’ she adds.

To get started with the lotus, the penetrating partner will sit with their legs loosely crossed. Their partner then straddles their lap, allowing the bottom partner to penetrate them.

Both partners then wrap their legs and arms around each other. In this position, rather than thrusting, the movement comes from rocking back and forth.

‘Overall, these positions work because they either stabilise the body or naturally adjust alignment through elevation or seating, rather than relying on perfect physical matching.’

But the expert says it’s important to remember that any concerns you have about height difference during sex can be managed with ‘simple adjustments’.

‘Slower pacing, clearer communication, and small changes in positioning are often enough to resolve most issues,’ Annabelle says. ‘In practice, height differences tend to create practical considerations rather than real barriers to compatibility.’
