2025 has proven to be a year in which cinematic comedies are having a comeback, as standout titles from this summer include Friendship, The Naked Gun and Freakier Friday. The Roses is one of the most anticipated comedies of the year, as it is a loose remake of the iconic 1989 dark satire The War of the Roses, which was itself based on the acclaimed novel of the same name. The Roses has Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman take over the roles that Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner made iconic, and served as a return to form for the legendary comedic director Jay Roach. However, the film’s true breakouts were actually Andy Sambergand Kate McKinnon, despite the fact that their characters are sidelined far too much.
