The Paper, the new spin-off of The Office, premieres on Peacock this week. Ahead of its debut, the streamer revealed a huge update about the future of the show.
What is the update for the new spin-off of The Office?
The Paper has been renewed for Season 2. The news comes one day before Season 1 streams on Peacock. Stars Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore announced the news on NBC’s Today show.
Greg Daniels, who created The Office and co-created The Paper, spoke to Variety about his plans for Season 2.
“We definitely have ideas,” Daniels explained. “We’ve been talking about stories for a possible Season 2, and it’ll be interesting to see what the audience thinks. We’ve gotten really good feedback from people inside the company and journalists and friends, but you never know what the broader world of ‘Office’ fans are going to think of it.”
Season 2 does not have a release date, but this early renewal could allow it to return at this time next year.
After following the lives of the employees at Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch, the documentary crew has found new subjects to film at the Toledo Truth-Teller, a historic Midwestern newspaper. Gleeson stars as Ned Sampson, the new editor trying to restore glory to the paper.
Besides Gleeson and Impacciatore, The Paper stars Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, Tim Key, and Oscar Nuñez, who returns as Oscar Martinez from The Office.
Guest stars include Eric Rahill, Tracy Letts, Molly Ephraim, Mo Welch, Allan Havey, Duane Shepard Sr., Nate Jackson, and Nancy Lenehan.
Daniels and Michael Koman are co-creators, co-showrunners, and executive producers on The Paper. Daniels also directed the pilot. The Office U.K. creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are executive producers on The Paper, along with Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas.
The Paper Season 1 will release all 10 episodes on September 4 on Peacock.
