Before he became one of the most acclaimed and honored filmmakers of his generation, Guillermo del Toro was just trying to make his mark in Hollywood, after having nearly had his spirit broken by Harvey Weinstein. Del Toro broke out with his Mexican horror film Cronos, and was promptly brought to America, where he set to work on the 1997 film Mimic. The movie underperformed at the box office, and his experience with Weinstein crushed him, but the filmmaker bounced back some years later by going back to his roots with The Devil's Backbone. He returned to America again, where he took on the challenge of making Blade II. Starring Wesley Snipes, the movie established del Toro as a director to reckon with, and he has only gone from strength to strength since then. And now, over two decades after its release, Blade II is witnessing a spike in interest on Paramount+.
