The Conjuring 5 & More Movies Can Happen Only on 1 Condition

James Wan recently talked about the future of The Conjuring universe and whether The Conjuring 5 could happen after Last Rites. The ninth installment in the franchise was released in theaters globally on September 5, 2025. Moreover, The Conjuring: Last Rites has turned out to be a blockbuster. It has had the biggest debut of all time for a horror movie and also in The Conjuring Universe. The opening weekend collection of this Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson movie is reported to be $187 million.

James Wan says a potential The Conjuring 5 ought to have the ‘family dynamic’ of past films

The Insidious co-creator recently sat down for a conversation and shared whether The Conjuring 5 could happen. He also shared his thoughts on the future of The Conjuring Universe.

James Wan stated to Comic Book Resources, “We all know that the heart of the franchise is really the Ed and Lorraine story, right? That is captured perfectly by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson. I’ve always said that people first came to The Conjuring films because they loved to be scared. They wanted to come for the horror and the scary set pieces. But they really keep coming back is because of Vera and Patrick playing Ed and Lorraine.”

Thus, Wan believes that if “there is any future story to be told” that would capture the family dynamic which Farmiga and Wilson brought to the films, then he doesn’t think that they would “ever detour from that.”

The Saw director added, “I would try and speak about this with some sensitivity, because I’m very superstitious, and I hate the concept of speaking about what’s going to happen in the future.”

Furthermore, while recently speaking about the future of the franchise with Collider, James Wan said, “I guess just the lore of the real-life Ed and Lorraine Warren is so rich, like the characters are so rich, the lore’s so rich, that they still really have a lot of stories left. And, I don’t know, the idea of a Judy and Tony story — who knows? There are many ways to approach this. But I guess I try not to give it too much thought at this point. I want to be respectful to where we are right now and focus on saying goodbye to this one.”
