The Conjuring: Last Rites is the fourth and final movie in the franchise, based on an alleged true story of the Smurl Hunting. Now that the movie has been released, fans of the franchise are curious about the real incidents that inspired the final film.

Here are the details on the incidents according to the family who experienced them.

What is Smurl Haunting’s true story of The Conjuring: Last Rites?

The Conjuring: Last Rites is directed by Michael Chaves, who also directed the previous installment. James Wan, the director of the first two movies, returns as a producer. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are reprising their roles as Lorraine and Ed Warren.

The alleged haunting incidents are centered around Jack and Janet Smurl, who live in West Pittston, Pennsylvania. The family also includes the couple’s four daughters and Jack’s parents. After moving into the house in late 1973, the family claimed to have experienced paranormal activities.

The hauntings started at the beginning of 1974 with minor incidents like loud noises and foul smells. Later, it became worse as the family started to witness physical activities like seeing shadowy figures, furniture shaking, their dog being thrown against the wall, and even being sexually assaulted by unseen forces. When their friends and neighbors also experienced minor paranormal activities at the house, the family contacted Ed and Lorraine Warren.

The Warrens visited their house and claimed that they experienced similar activities. Incidents like temperature drops and dark apparitions were happening all around them. They concluded that the spirit in their house is powerful and intelligent.

Following the investigation, the Catholic Church sent a priest from Connecticut to perform an exorcism. They tried it three times, but were unsuccessful.

By 1986, a reverend from a local Parish claimed that he had driven away the spirit that resided in their house. The family supported these claims and said that the incidents had stopped. But a year later, the family revealed that minor activities are still happening, but they aren’t worried about those.

While the Smurl family moved away in 1988, the new owner shared that they haven’t experienced anything paranormal.
