The Batman 2 Plot to Focus on Bruce Wayne With Its New Villain

Matt Reeves has revealed new details about The Batman: Part 2 and its direction. In a recent discussion, the director revealed that the sequel’s villain will connect to Bruce Wayne’s past, outlined how the story expands on the character beyond the cowl, and addressed speculation about Robin’s possible inclusion.

Matt Reeves confirmed that The Batman: Part 2 will feature a villain tied directly to Bruce Wayne’s history. He explained, “Picking the right villain that digs into what that does, that sort of goes into his past and his life. That was what drove that discussion. I won’t tell you where we ended up, but we’re super excited about it, and I will say it’s never really been done in a movie before.” Reeves said he and co-writer Mattson Tomlin studied comics and exchanged ideas. They also drew inspiration from films outside Gotham stories to shape the direction.

Reeves emphasized that the sequel will expand Bruce Wayne’s character arc beyond the Batman-focused lens of the first film. He noted, “The first story is so much about the Batman, and so I always wanted in the movies to make sure that… we never lose Rob at the center of these stories.” He confirmed Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Falcone will not appear but praised her work in The Penguin.

Reeves confirmed the film remains a DC Elseworlds project, separate from James Gunn’s DCU. He responded to Gunn’s interest in him directing a DCU project by saying, “We haven’t talked about anything like that… I want to play out the stories we began and arrive at the conclusion that I hoped we’d arrived at from the beginning.”

The team will reportedly begin production on The Batman: Part 2 in spring 2026. Robert Pattinson has already reviewed the script.
