A proper thriller should make you slightly unreasonable. One more chapter becomes four. It’s like binge-watching but instead of watching, you read. You start distrusting somebody because they paused before answering a question. You tell yourself you will stop once the character reaches safety, then the book reveals that safety was the problem. That is the level I want. Suspense is useful. Compulsion is better.
