The period of time between 1980 and 2000 was one of the most productive in film history because it saw a complete revolution in the way that the business worked. The early ‘80s saw blockbuster filmmaking in full swing following the success of Star Wars and Jaws in the late ‘70s, and the decade became centered on the cultivation of franchises, many of which are still producing new installments today. However, the ‘80s wasn’t purely about populism, as it was towards the end of the decade that the Sundance Film Festival became a more significant voice in spotlighting up-and-coming filmmakers from emerging talents. The release of Do the Right Thing served as a major breakthrough within the diversification of films, specifically those that could speak to topical political issues, and the dawn of Disney’s "Renaissance" era saw more widespread acceptance for animation.
