While viewers of HBO’s latest crime drama, Task, continue to contemplate the unexpected ending of its premiere, Tom Pelphrey, who plays Robbie Prendergast in the series, has explained his character’s contentious actions in the ending moments of Episode 1. In a recent interview, the actor opened up about Robbie’s decision to abduct the little boy during his final heist, instead of taking the high road.
Tom Pelphrey says Robbie was only left with ‘one option’ in Task Episode 1 ending
The Ozark alum noted during a recent conversation that Robbie and his acquaintance, Cliff, opt to take the only surviving kid during his last robbery back to his home, as it is the only viable option at the time.
“If he didn’t do what he did, the story is over before it starts,” Tom Pelphrey remarked while speaking with TV Insider.
In Task, Pelphrey’s Robbie teams up with his pals, Cliff and Peaches, to rob houses whose occupants engage in drug peddling in order to provide a better life for his family. However, their misadventures end up alerting a local gang, named Dark Hearts, which ultimately catches the attention of the FBI.
In his final heist, Robbie ends up crossing paths with a Dark Hearts member, which tragically results in the deaths of the homeowners, the gangster himself, as well as Peaches. As the dejected Robbie and Cliff decide to flee the crime scene, they encounter a little boy who was also present in the house.
Unfortunately for Robbie, the boy ends up catching them without their masks. Stuck in a conundrum, Robbie and Cliff decide to take the child with them, bringing Task Episode 1 to an explosive end.
Tom Pelphrey explained that killing the boy was never an option for his character, as “that goes against everything that Robbie is…Robbie’s not gonna do that.” He then highlighted his character’s helplessness in the ending of Task Episode 1 by simply saying, “Kind of leaves you one option, which is you gotta take the kid.”
Also featuring the likes of Mark Ruffalo, Emilia Jones, and Raúl Castillo, Task premiered on HBO on September 7, with its remaining six episodes set to come out every other Sunday.
