Steven Universe Spin-off Series Finally Gets a Status Update

The spin-off series of Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars, has received a status update from its writer, Ian Jones-Quartey. Lars of the Stars was announced by series creator Rebecca Sugar at the Annecy International Film Festival in June last year. The original Steven Universe series concluded with Steven Universe Future in 2020, six years ago.

Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars writer Ian Jones-Quartey recently gave a positive update regarding the highly anticipated upcoming spin-off series.

On X (formerly Twitter), a user asked Jones-Quartey, “@ianjq Are you working for the spin off of Steven universe: Lars of the stars? And if it yes, can you give us some news about it?” In his reply, the writer wrote, “Yes, we are still working on Lars Of The Stars but I don’t have any news to share yet. Hopefully soon!”

According to a report by Deadline, creator Rebecca Sugar announced the spin-off in June 2025 and said, “I really miss my world, and I really miss my characters too. So I’m co-creating, with Ian Jones-Quartey, a new ‘Steven Universe’ series. I can’t wait to share [the sequel] with you and can’t thank you enough for all your support.”

Based on the description unveiled by Sugar, the series will focus on Lars as he goes on to “smuggle contraband, evade the authorities, and uncover the darkest secrets of the fallen Gem Empire” (via Variety).

Steven Universe debuted with its Season 1 in 2013 and went on to become one of the most successful animated series on Cartoon Network. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a perfect score of 100 percent on the Tomatometer, based on critic reviews, and a score of 84 percent on the Popcornmeter, based on audience reviews.
