Steven Spielberg's Last Sci-Fi Box-Office Record Falls to 'Disclosure Day'

Armed with positive reviews and heady buzz, Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Dayshattered box-office expectations in its first weekend of release. Disclosure Day is Spielberg's first sci-fi film in nearly a decade, and his first original sci-fi film in even longer. The last time he dabbled in the genre, in which he is considered an authority, was in 2018 withReady Player One. Unlike Disclosure Day, that movie was based on a bestselling novel. It was also released during a decade when Hollywood movies were doing exceptionally well in China. That phase has long since ended. Such was the importance of the China market that Ready Player One grossed more there than it did in North America.
