One of the biggest indicators of Marvel Studios' declining goodwill was the apparent underperformance of riskier movies. There was a time when anything that the studio released would be embraced by fans. But even the diehards became wary around half a decade ago. Released in 2021, Eternals fell short of expectations both critically and commercially, grossing a little more than $400 million worldwide against a reported budget of $200 million. It remains one of the worst-rated MCU movies on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. More recently, Thunderbolts* had an even more difficult time at the box office, despite excellent reviews. It was a sign that audiences weren't willing to take the plunge any longer. But a little over a decade ago, one of Marvel's biggest-ever hits was based on largely unknown characters.
