Soulm8te just set an unwanted record for the M3GAN franchise on Rotten Tomatoes. The Blumhouse spinoff’s early critical reception marks a new low for the AI horror series, falling behind both previous entries.

Soulm8te’s reviews lead to franchise worst Rotten Tomatoes score

Soulm8te currently holds a 55% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 11 reviews. The Blumhouse and Atomic Monster sci-fi thriller marks the lowest-rated entry in the franchise. The original M3GAN earned a Certified Fresh 93% from 318 reviews, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Its sequel, M3GAN 2.0, received a 57% Tomatometer score from 245 reviews. Soulm8te now trails both films in critical reception.

Kate Dolan directed and co-wrote Soulm8te alongside Rafael Jordan. The film stars David Rysdahl, Lily Sullivan, and Claudia Doumit. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment released the R-rated film on streaming on August 1, 2026. Jason Blum and James Wan served as producers on the project.

The Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney gave the film a Fresh rating. He noted that “the movie is more watchable than you might expect, and the cast is appealing.” However, he pointed to “the amount of plot overlap with last year’s Companion.” RogerEbert.com’s Katie Rife awarded the film just one out of four stars. She wrote that the film should “serve as a reminder to film executives everywhere.” The AV Club’s Jacob Oller gave Soulm8te a C- grade. He called it “the dumbest movie of the year to brush against the idea of the havoc men wreak.”

The film follows a grieving engineer who tests a new AI companion after a tech giant acquires his company. He attempts to program her into a sentient soulmate, but she develops her own needs. Consequently, she unleashes what the synopsis describes as “a relentless spree of precision-engineered mayhem.”

Meanwhile, M3GAN grossed $95 million domestically during its original theatrical run. In contrast, M3GAN 2.0 earned $24.1 million at the domestic box office. Unlike its predecessors, Soulm8te skipped theaters entirely and debuted directly on streaming platforms.
