Director Shawn Levy has decided to work with Marvel instead of Tom Cruise. This changes one of the biggest MCU narratives.

Levy is set to reunite with Marvel for Ghost Rider, a new MCU movie starring Ryan Gosling set to release in 2028. Before choosing Ghost Rider, Levy was contemplating his next directorial effort after 2027’s Star Wars: Starfighter.

One of Levy’s directorial options was Days of Thunder 2, the legacy sequel to the 1990 racing movie starring Cruise. According to Puck’s Matt Belloni, Cruise “aggressively pursued” Levy for Days of Thunder 2. This might explain why Cruise visited the Starfighter set. Ultimately, Levy passed on the Cruise opportunity and chose to work with Gosling again.

Shawn Levy’s Ghost Rider choice challenges the narrative that Marvel and the MCU have lost their pull

What happened to the narrative that the “MCU was dead” and that audiences experienced “superhero fatigue?” The MCU certainly faced challenges after Avengers: Endgame. Marvel made too many movies and Disney+ shows from 2021 through 2024. These projects felt like homework for audience members. If fans didn’t watch the right show or movie beforehand, they might not understand the lore behind a project.

Marvel has also struggled to make new stars after losing Iron Man and Captain America. While the Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four have been interesting additions to the MCU, both movies underperformed in 2025.

As bleak as things got, Marvel superheroes have made a strong comeback this year. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the third highest-grossing movie of all time. Avengers Endgame: Encore just topped the opening weekend at the box office. Avengers: Doomsday could gross over $1 billion during its opening weekend. Marvel movies feel like significant cultural events again.

Levy knows firsthand the power of Marvel movies and their impact on pop culture. Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine was the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, before The Odyssey passed it this year.

As much as Marvel critics wanted to write the MCU’s obituary, it’s shifted back in a positive direction. Levy just turned down Hollywood’s biggest movie star to work on an MCU movie. On one hand, working with Cruise is a life-changing proposition. On the other, legacy sequels are extremely risky. Does anyone under 30 care about Days of Thunder? It’s understandable why Levy sees Marvel as the safer bet.

In 2028, we’ll have our answer on whether Levy made the right choice or not.
