Season 2 of Popular HBO Horror Show Is Coming, but Not Immediately

The hit HBO series It: Welcome to Derry will return for Season 2, though viewers will have to wait for a reason. The announcement comes directly from Andy and Barbara Muschietti, the sibling duo behind both the recent Stephen King adaptations and the new prequel series.

Since the Season 1 finale aired three months ago, the show’s growing fanbase has awaited official renewal news. Despite the series debuting as one of HBO Max’s biggest openings since House of the Dragon and The Last of Us, the streamer has remained quiet until now.

The Muschiettis, who were involved with the It films and serve as executive producers on the HBO series, addressed the renewal status during an interview with Collider. While the streamer has made no public announcement, the pair assured that work is underway. “Yeah, it is going to be official,” Barbara Muschietti said.

She explained that the lack of It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 news does not reflect the show’s performance. “A lot of times, the announcements are the studio having to declare their confidence for the show. We don’t need that because clearly we’re good.”

On the other hand, Andy Muschietti pointed to business logistics as the reason for the delay. “Sometimes the announcements come a little delayed because of deals and stuff. I don’t want to get too granular about it, but there’s a general intention to make it happen.”

For now, the creative plan for It: Welcome to Derry involves tracing Pennywise the Dancing Clown’s previous appearances throughout history. The extraterrestrial entity emerges from the sewers every 27 years to terrorize the Maine town, and Season 2 will jump back to 1935.

“The Bradley Gang is coming in hot,” Andy Muschietti revealed, referencing the infamous Bradley Gang massacre from Stephen King’s source material. Furthermore, Barbara Muschietti teased that viewers can expect “a lot more fantastic characters. It’s a lot of fun […] There are hats! [Laughs].”
