Scream 8: Melissa Barrera Reveals the One Way She’d Return to Horror Franchise After Firing

Melissa Barrera has opened up about what it would take for her to return to the Scream franchise following her firing in late 2023.

In an interview with JustWatch, Barrera was asked whether she would ever return if producers reached out. While the actress emphasized her love for the franchise and her experience making the films, the 36-year-old made it clear she would consider rejoining only if control of the series shifted away from its current production company.

“Not with the company that currently holds the rights [Spyglass Media Group]. I love the franchise,” she said. The Mexican actress added that she would consider coming back if the property moved to new owners who “honor Wes Craven’s legacy more.”

Spyglass holds the primary rights for the Scream franchise, which took over from the fifth film. Barrera played Sam Carpenter, the antagonist in Scream 5 and Scream 6, before being dropped from Scream 7.

Spyglass dropped Barrera from the franchise due to her Instagram post about the Israel-Hamas conflict. The main issue she pointed out is how the company handled her exit. According to Barrera, they never apologized, even after she felt she was proven right.

The actress noted that company execs created severe challenges by labelling her something she is not. The Your Monster star added, “A lot of, like, the hate and the difficulty that I faced in the last years is because the leadership of that company made it a point to label me something that I’m not.”

Because of this, the actress clarified that even an apology from Spyglass would not change her mind. “Even with an apology, I wouldn’t go back to work with them,” she said.

Meanwhile, the franchise is moving forward with an untitled eighth film in the slasher series, with Lilla Zuckerman and Nora Zuckerman penning the script.
