Scarlett Johansson‘s star-studded Exorcist movie just took a major step forward. The director took to social media to share the latest update on the franchise reboot.

Mike Flanagan gives update on The Exorcist’s filming

Mike Flanagan has officially wrapped filming on his upcoming Exorcist reboot. The director shared the news on Instagram alongside Blumhouse, posting an image of a purple cross. “That’s a wrap. What an incredible experience. Forever grateful to this extraordinary cast and crew!” Flanagan wrote in the caption.

Principal photography commenced in March this year. Michael Fimognari served as the cinematographer on the production. The film marks the seventh entry in The Exorcist franchise overall.

Scarlett Johansson leads the cast in the role of a rookie detective. The premise follows her character as she encounters an unimaginable evil during an investigation. Diane Lane, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Laurence Fishburne also star in the film. Ejiofor reportedly plays the character of an ex-con turned priest, while Johansson plays the mother of Jacobi Jupe’s character.

The cast also includes Sasha Calle, John Leguizamo, Hamish Linklater, and Carla Gugino. Flanagan brought many of his frequent collaborators, including Kate Siegel and Samantha Sloyan. Rahul Kohli, Gil Bellows, Carl Lumbly, and Robert Longstreet round out the ensemble.

Flanagan writes, produces, and directs the film as a franchise reboot. Blumhouse Productions, Atomic Monster, Morgan Creek Entertainment, and Red Room Pictures produce the project. The reboot replaced the previously planned Exorcist: Deceiver movie after that film’s cancellation in 2024. David Gordon Green had originally stepped down from Deceiver following The Exorcist: Believer’s poor reception (via Variety).

Flanagan previously described his aggressive pursuit of the project during promotion for The Life of Chuck. He stated he saw an opportunity to create something new within the franchise without relying on nostalgia (via Esquire).

Universal Pictures has scheduled the film for release on March 12, 2027.
