Sarah Michelle Gellar is trading stakes for something far more dangerous in her next supernatural project. The actress has signed on to play an iconic mythological figure in an upcoming romance with a wild premise.

Sarah Michelle Gellar’s new supernatural project marks her latest genre return

Thud has found its leads, with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Rudy Pankow boarding the supernatural romance, Deadline reported exclusively. Mali Elfman is directing the project, which casts Gellar as the Grim Reaper and Pankow as the Devil. The screenplay comes from Noga Pnueli, whose previous credit Meet Cute landed on The Black List.

Two unlikely figures cross paths at a three-day destination wedding in the film. Both the Grim Reaper and the Devil show up planning to stir trouble but instead fall for each other. The production will shoot in Los Angeles with support from a California tax credit.

Derek Bishé and David Grove Churchill Viste are producing the project. Divide/Conquer’s Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks join Radio Silence’s Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin as executive producers. Helmstreet Productions’ Lindsay Helms, Joel Nevells, Dan Lawler and Pnueli also executive produce.

Gellar previously teamed up with Radio Silence on their Searchlight horror comedy sequel Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. She also recently appeared in Showtime’s Dexter: Original Sin and Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot. The Tubi animated series Breaking Bear sits next on her slate, featuring Brendan Fraser and Josh Gad.

Pankow built his profile through Netflix’s Outer Banks and most recently headlined Universal’s Reminders of Him opposite Maika Monroe. He has since wrapped work on Cowboy, a modern Western starring Ben Foster and directed by Cameron Duddy. Elfman broke through with her debut feature Next Exit, which screened at Tribeca before Magnolia Pictures distributed it theatrically.

Her latest directorial effort, The Scariest Skeleton, formed part of the animated horror anthology Dark Corners. Lisa Zagoria is casting the project.
