The expansion of the “Whoniverse” has undergone a significant shift following the conclusion of the co-production partnership between the BBC and Disney+. While the franchise recently focused on the five-part miniseries The War Between the Land and the Sea, several planned sequels that were intended to establish a recurring annual format have been officially scrapped.

The primary follow-up in this lost roadmap was a project titled The War Between the Earth and the Moon. This installment was intended to serve as the next chapter in an anthology-style series of spin-offs, moving the focus from the ocean-dwelling Sea Devils to a lunar conflict.

The Scrapped Plot of ‘The Earth and the Moon’

Details regarding the development of The War Between the Earth and the Moon reveal a high-stakes science-fiction premise centered on global security and political tension. The plot involved a tyrannical U.S. President who takes control of a UNIT moonbase. From this position, the President aims nuclear weapons at Earth, effectively declaring independence for the lunar colony and holding the planet hostage.

This project was part of a larger planned cycle of “War Between” titles. In addition to the Moon-based sequel, other titles identified in the scrapped roadmap included The War Between the Men and the Women and The War Between the Cleverer than Not. These installments were envisioned as a way to maintain a consistent Doctor Who presence on screen between flagship seasons.

Impact of the Disney Partnership Termination

The cancellation of these future projects is directly attributed to the termination of the co-production deal between the BBC and Disney+. This partnership had previously provided the financial backing and global platform necessary for such an ambitious expansion of the franchise. With the dissolution of the deal, the strategy for the “Whoniverse” has been significantly scaled back.

While The War Between the Land and the Sea—starring Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw—was produced as a five-episode miniseries for a December 2025 release, the broader vision for annual spin-offs has been set aside.
