Beginning in 1979, one of the most beloved sci-fi franchises of all time came into existence, and although it wasn't an instant favorite, that quickly changed in the years that followed. Alien, created by screenwriters Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, launched the film series with the 1979 movie of the same name directed by Ridley Scott, marking his first entry in the franchise. His next two installments didn't arrive until more than three decades later, the latter of which became his most divisive to date.
